Coon Dog Day Spotlight: Bernard Edwards |
A word from the artist himself about his work & background: "I was born in Spartanburg County, SC and grew up near the Pacolet River where Lake Bowen is currently located. I have had a great love for the outdoors since a very young age, and have had many wonderful adventures in this area's beautiful nature. I remember tracking rabbits in the winter snows, and going down to the river on those hot summer days for an all day fishing trip to catch catfish. Even though I ended up catching mostly "knotty heads" instead of catfish, I would enjoy the fishing and swimming until the sun went down. On the way home, I would stop to pick blackberries for the blackberry cobblers my mom made that were the best tasting thing on earth to me. I moved to Tryon when I was in my twenties, after several years of waterfowl hunting and salmon fishing in Canada, and I realized the value of hand carved decoys. I gave up playing golf in the late 80's, and purchased book after book on wood carving to teach myself how to make hand carved animals. During the summer months for years now, you can find me and my old dog "Barney" in my workshop practicing up on carving waterfowl and other animals out of wood. I became interested in Saluda's Coon Dog Day since it was so near my home on the other side of Warrior Mountain, and I began carving the parade float trophies for the festival in 2010. In 2011, I again provided hand carved animal trophies for the parade float winners as well as coon hound plaques for the Coon Dog Day 5K winners. I love the Coon Dog Day celebration, and I want to do my part to make sure the event continues to be well attended and successful in the future. Thanks to Monica and Ms.Marion in the City Hall office for all their encouragement and positive feedback on my creations, and I will see you all at the next Coon Dog Day! |

Bernard came to us in 2010 with examples of his skilled woodcarvings and an offer to participate in Coon Dog Day- I was so excited about having some local crafts as prizes for the event, but I had no idea what was in store for us. Bernard's work is fantastic! Each piece has it's own character and is completely unique. I look forward to many more years of being surprised with this artist's creative talent. |
